  There are thousands of home businesses based solely on affiliate programs on the internet today. Why? Because they are easy to start and run. You can start with nothing more than a computer and an internet connection (which you already have or else you wouldn't be reading this!). Yes, it is really that simple.

  There are, in fact, a couple of types of affiliate programs. The first is simply a one or two teir program where you sign up with a company to sell their product and earn a commission on your sales. A good example of this type of program is Amazon.com. Many thousands of people have joined their affiliate program (myself included). You will find links to some of their products throughout my website. I have also joined Shawn Casey's great affiliate program, The Gold Affiliate Program, and you can find links to that one also on this site. Basically, if I make a sale through this website or through placing ads throughout the world wide web (www) the sale will be tracked to me through my affiliate ID and I will receive a commission for it. We can also recruit people for these programs and get paid a percentage of their sales, however we can only go one level down (you'll understand more after you read the next paragraphs). I know several people who make very good livings using just these types of affiliate programs.

  The next type of program is, are your ready for this? MLM - Multi Level Marketing. Wait, don't leave, they're not what you think!

  Network Marketing, also called multilevel marketing, person-to-person marketing, and one-on-one marketing is a form of direct selling. You are already familiar with this type of selling through Avon, Tupperware, Mary Kay, Fuller Brush, just to name a few.

  Direct selling companies market goods and services through networks of thousands of independent distributors. These distributors either buy products from their companies and then resell them to consumers, or they sell products on behalf of their companies for a commission.

  Network marketing gives direct selling a new spin. In both types of companies, distributors make money by selling products directly to consumers. But in network marketing companies, distributors can also make money by building their own sales organizations and receiving commissions or bonuses on the sales generated by the distributors in the organizations. They build these sales organizations (often called "downlines") by recruiting new distributors, and helping those new distributors recruit other distributors, and so on (thus Multilevel).

  Confused yet? Let me try this - I joined a great MLM company Sound Future International Marketing Group and I am making money by selling their products and earning commissions. Lets say that you join from my website (or from an ad I placed) and are placed in my "downline". I do not make any money from you unless you sell something and I get a portion of the sales volume from those below me (and eventually below you). Now lets say "Joe" joins under you through an ad you placed. If Joe buys or sells something, you earn a portion of the sales volume and I also earn a portion since I recruited you. Follow so far? Good. Now lets say that Joe recruits "Mary" and Mary buys or sells something. Joe, you and I would all get a portion of the sales volume because Mary is in our downline. So you see, the more people you recruit, the more money you can make!

  Here are a few facts about this growing industry:

• Every week, more than 55,000 people in the US alone sign up as network marketers.


• In excess of 10 million people in the US alone are distributors for network marketing companies.


• In the US, sales in the network marketing industry are in the $30 billion range.


• Network marketing is offered in more than 140 countries.


• 65% of all network marketing distributors are women.


• Approximately 80% of networkers are part-time and 20% are full-time. For the vast majority of networkers, it is a "second job" with the hopes of making some extra monthly income.

  Of course the best way to make lots of money with these programs is to recruit new people to join under your leadership. When they join in your "downline" you can earn income from their efforts as well as your own. Many, many people are getting very good incomes from these programs. Most offer some form of training and support (something I find extremely useful) and therefore should be something you look for when you decide to join one of them.

  Some of the things you should look for when considering an affiliate program to join are:
 

• It should provide a quality product or service with a proven system to sell it.


• It should have a sophisticated tracking program to manage your statistics. You will want to know where your customers are coming from (i.e. your ads, ezines or your own web site).


• It should be FREE to join. You should NOT have to fork over your hard earned money to join.


• It should provide training and resources for your use at any time.


• You should receive a fair commission on your sales. Look for anywhere from 10% to 30% or more.


• It should offer 24/7 support, a very important factor because you will have hundreds of questions when you start and will want prompt answers.


• You should be able to build a large downline, and not be restricted to two or three levels.


• You should not have to earn large amounts of money in order to get paid. And you will want to be paid at least monthly. Some programs make you wait until you have accumulated hundreds of dollars before they pay you!


• The company should have been in business for some time. There are some who are gone almost as fast as they start!
